Access to higher education – an issue we’ve been greatly concerned about at Pima –– is generating attention at national level, thanks to two prominent political figures.
We should thank Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush for setting aside their differences to, as the Washington Post put it, sound the alarm about “higher education becoming financially out of reach for too many young Americans.”
Clinton and Bush spoke at a Globalization of Higher Education conference in Dallas. Each touched on themes that resonate with those of us who have dedicated our professional lives to higher education. Affordability was front and center.
Affordability is and should be a central issue for Pima and most other community colleges. We have long prided ourselves at keeping our tuition low. Even with our new in-state tuition, Pima remains one of the most affordable higher education options in Arizona.
This issue isn’t going away anytime soon, nor should it. Maintaining affordability must remain one of our guiding principles.
